Tuesday Tunes – I Heard the Bells

I’m going to take my Tuesday Tunes post on a different angle this week. Usually I post a great song to workout to that you might be able to add to your library of music. Well, not this week. This week I’m doing a Christmas song.

One of my favorite Christmas songs is I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. I don’t know if many of you know the history behind the song, but I found this information on Wikipedia and in a book my mom has.

It says that during the Civil War, Longfellow’s oldest son joined the Union cause as a soldier without his father’s approval/blessing. Henry was informed of this via a letter from his son. “I have tried hard to resist the temptation of going without your leave but I cannot any longer,” he wrote. “I feel it to be my first duty to do what I can for my country and I would willingly lay down my life for it if it would be of any good”. Henry’s son was severely wounded in the Battle of New Hope Church in Virginia.

Wikipedia states “Coupled with the recent loss of his wife Frances, who died as a result of an accidental fire, Longfellow was inspired to write “Christmas Bells”.

I find that one of the verses of this song really fits what has happened in the world lately, with the shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut.

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Tuesday Tunes – Transiberian Orchestra

I heard this song on the way home from the gym last night. There are actually quite a few holiday songs that have a good beat and are good to workout to. This song starts out slow, but about 30 seconds or so in to it, the beat picks up & this time of year, it makes for a good workout song. 🙂 Enjoy!

Tuesday Tunes – Movie Soundtrack

Who doesn’t love the 80s? The 80s brought us some of THE BEST music in the world! I think it’s one of my favorite genres of music.

A little tidbit of info about this song…the movie Footloose was filmed about 40 minutes from my house down in Lehi, Utah. They have a century ride every year that takes you by all the places that they used in the film.

This song always gets me excited to workout and when I hear it, you can’t help but get up and dance along!

Tuesday Tunes – James Taylor

This isn’t a song that I workout to, but it holds a special place in my heart.

Thirteen years ago on October 27th, my best friend had a sweet baby. His name was James. We always called him Baby James. It was her first baby. Sadly, 6 weeks later, he passed away from some heart defects. Every time I hear this song, I think of him and I think of my best friend.

I actually called my friend on October 27th, while I was out on a run, huffing & puffing my way through 10 miles, to tell her I was thinking of her and her baby that day.
