Snowboarding

Our slogan here in Utah is “The Greatest Snow on Earth”. Even on our license plates it says “Ski Utah”. We had the Olympics here in 2002. I even worked at a ski resort one winter. I’ve lived in Utah my whole life and have NO clue how to ski or snowboard.

Ski Utah!

Each year I set a goal to try and learn to ski/snowboard, but I have been unsuccessful at fulfilling that goal. I’ve set this goal because I’m not a huge fan of the snow come winter time in Utah. Well, guess what? In Utah, in the winter, it’s snows. I have to get used to it and enjoy it. My hope is if I learn to ski/snowboard, I will start to enjoy winter more. Plus, until the last couple of years, on Christmas Day, my family has always driven up to Park City and had a picnic in our car and watched the skiers and snowboarders ski down the mountain. I’ve always wanted to be able to join them on Christmas day. This year, I’m making it happen!! I’m going to do it!!!

I can just picture myself flying down the mountain.

A looooooong time ago, I attempted to learn to ski. I went with a couple of co-workers up to Snowbird Ski Resort to attempt it. Now, this was before I was in shape. I’m sure that had a lot to do with my not so good attempt at learning. I was scared learning how to ski. I was told you have to keep your skis parallel to each other and don’t cross the tips of them. I remember before I even got to the bunny hill, I had my ski’s on and it was VERY hard for me to control them. If I fell, I didn’t have any leg strength to get back up without taking the skis off. Going down the bunny hill was just super scary for me. It was just not a good experience for me. Plus, you have to take in to consideration that I’m not the most coordinated gal you’ll ever met.

Since that experience, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s going to be easier to learn to snowboard. Why? Because you don’t have to keep your 2 ski’s together. Both feet are strapped down to one board. A lot of my friends at Keys on Main know how to ski or snowboard. Last Saturday night I asked Aron to teach me to snowboard this year.

Aron wanted to know why I wanted him to teach me instead of getting professional lessons. Well, for starters, he’s cheaper. J I told him I’d even buy him lunch and a beer. Even buying him lunch and beer, he’d be cheaper than a professional. Plus, I just feel more comfortable around him than I would some stranger, ya know?

Aron started showing me basic stuff on how to turn and whether I was right footed or goofy footed (I’m goofy footed) Saturday night. I told him I would practice this stuff and report back the next weekend. J

Aron and Jason said we should go to Wolf Mountain for my first couple of times. They said it’s the easiest bunny hill and it’s cheap. We haven’t set a date yet as to when we’re going to go. The only problem I foresee is Aron and Jason work nights at the club, so when they do go snowboarding, they go during the day. Well, I work during the day. Maybe one of the Federal holidays coming up when I don’t have to work, we can go.

I’m pretty excited. Here’s to learning how to snowboard and enjoying the winter time!

Have you ever skied or snowboarded?

Halloween at Keys on Main

Lucky you folks, you get 2 posts in one day! I figured I had to post about the Halloween party I went to.

For the past 4 years, I’ve gone to Keys on Main for Halloween. They throw a bad-ass Halloween party. It’s a TON of fun!

Because Keys on Main is a dueling piano bar, three years ago, I dressed up as a dueling piano. Last year, I dressed up as a clown, and this year, I dressed up as a RoadKill Runner.

My friend Katy & I as “dueling pianos”.

I got some old running clothes and put tire marks on the back like I’d been hit by a car. Then, I had my dad do my face & legs up as follows:

I tried to look the part.

I was in the restroom at one point during the evening and one lady asked if the gashes on my legs were real. Lol. It was awesome!

Have you ever seen the clothing brand Affliction? It’s really expensive clothing and it looks like a bedazzler was taken to the clothing. It’s EXPENSIVE clothing too. Now…nothing against the company, but usually the people that walk in to Keys on Main wearing this type of clothing, especially the men, are usually douche-bag type men (sorry, couldn’t think of a nicer word). So, what did my dad dress up as for Halloween? A redneck style affliction. Lol. It was awesome. Here are pictures:

Afflction spelled “Aflickshun” pinned to a black t-shirt.

Yup, we even pinned doilies to his butt pockets. Lol!

Usually, at Keys on Main, if you see a guy wearing Affliction apparel, he’s usually drinking an AMF. An AMF is a bright blue alcoholic drink. Well, since my dad doesn’t drink alcohol, so my dad would really look the part, they made him a Sprite & put blue flavoring in it. After all was said and done, my dad looked the part perfectly.

Have no fear, there’s no alcohol in this beverage.

Here are some pictures of the staff at Keys:

A-Ron as a witch doctor.

Brandon as Gene Simmons in his KISS costume.

George as Prince. When George sings a Prince song, he sounds just like him too.

When George plays “Gangnam Style” on the piano, Mike comes out from the kitchen & does the dance. It’s awesome!

Eric as a vampire

Jason, Jon & Jack.

Jason dressed up as A-Ron. When A-Ron isn’t at work as security at Keys on Main, this is what he looks like. Seriously. He did an awesome job!

Kendrick as Rocky Balboa!

The Steam Punk Couple. I LOVED their costumes. Wish they would’ve won the costume contest.

Did you dress up for Halloween? What did you dress up as?

My Favorite Place

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you know that one of my favorite places to go on the weekend is Keys on Main. Keys on Main is Salt Lake City’s premiere dueling piano club. They’ve been open 4 years and I’ve been going almost every weekend for the past 3 1/2, almost 4 years.

I used to go every Friday and Saturday night, but with usually having a long run on Saturday mornings, I haven’t been going on Friday night lately (I’ve been catching alot of crap for it too. Lol.) I’ve been going so much though that the staff and piano players there, they’re like my family.

Well, this last weekend was a real treat! Within the last year, they bought 2 dueling piano clubs up in Seattle and now there is a Keys on Main-Seattle and a Keys on Main-Tacoma. Every once in a while, if one of the piano players down here is on vacation or they need to perform at a private party and they don’t have enough piano players down here in Salt Lake City, they’ll fly down one of the piano players from Seattle.

This weekend, we got a treat and both Zach and Aaron came down from Keys on Main-Seattle and RULED the Saturday night show!!! It was awesome to have them down here. I managed to take a couple of pictures Saturday night.

Zach plays an AWESOME Led Zepplin!

My favorite song Aaron does is “Bottoms Up”

Have you ever been to a dueling piano show?

Talents

This might not be such a hidden talent, but I don’t know why, I just decided to blog about it tonight.

Ever since I was probably 9 or 10 years old I’ve played the piano. I maybe took 1/2 dozen piano lessons, but that’s it. My mom tried to teach me how to play the piano and that didn’t work. I even went to a lady up the street, but I never really practiced.

Alot of people think I’m REALLY good at the piano. I think I’m ok. I have a hard time reading music. I play more by ear than anything. Knowing how to count the notes and how many counts each note gets, etc., yeah, I just don’t get that.

I’ve played piano at a couple of wedding receptions, but that’s it. I think it’d be fun to make that in to a business, but I’ve never really tried. Plus, I just don’t know if I’m good enough.

I’ve always found piano music relaxing. I’ve found it very fascinating. I could sit and watch someone play the piano for hours. I think that’s one of the reasons I like Keys on Main so much. You want to talk about super-duper talent? You should see the guys at Keys on Main. Holy hell, they amaze me!!! I can’t tell you how many songs they have memorized in their head (I have zero). Just as an example, here is a video I took at Keys on Main a while ago.

Yes, that is all improv! I’d kick a dragon’s ass to be able to play the piano like that.

I used to play the guitar. In high school I had to have an art credit and I was given my grandpa’s Gibson guitar. I passed the course getting a C+ I think, but do you think I can remember any ounce of that course to be able to play the guitar again? Nope. I do regret that. I would love to be able to pick up the guitar and play again.

What talents do you have?

Halloween Costume Idea

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Halloween! It’s one of my most favorite holiday’s. I don’t know if it’s because it’s the same month as my birthday or what, but I just love it. I love to dress up in costume and go out, etc.

Well, the other day, on my way home from work, I was listening to the radio and I heard the song The Joker by Steve Miller Band come on and it gave me an ingenious idea for a Halloween costume!

Well, if you listen to the song, the first words are “Some people call me the space cowboy, some call me the gangster of love, some people call me Maurice…” If you had a group of people, THAT is what you could dress up as.

Have someone dress up as a Space Cowboy:

A gangster of love:

And then for Maurice, have someone dress up as a business man in a really fancy suit, etc., and then put on one of these name tags that says “Maurice”:

Then, last but not least. The second verse starts out as “You’re the cutest thing that I ever did see, I really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree…” Now, I know this is a stretch, but then a girl could dress up as a peach!

This would be perfect if you were going to a place like Keys on Main or something. I don’t have enough people to pull this off, otherwise I totally would.
