In Search of Motivation – 2014 Races

My life has just been crazy busy lately. It’s nice, but on the same hand, I don’t like it. I’ve also been lacking in motivation lately too. Now that I’ve become my own personal trainer, I feel like I don’t have to be held accountable, ya know? So, I’ve been really slacking. Knowing I haven’t had any races to train for hasn’t been helping either.

So, what am I going to do about it? Well, today I signed up for the Utah State Triathlon Championship Half Iron distance race on Sept 13. It isn’t an Ironman sanctioned event, but it is USAT sanctioned. Unfortunately, I can’t afford an actual Ironman this year. I realize the race isn’t until Sept 2014, and training won’t start until May 2014, but hopefully it’ll help me get my butt in gear. It does make me a little nervous though. I’ve searched online for free training plans and I found this training plan that I’m going to use to get ready for the 70.3. It differs from the training plan I had when I had a coach and he trained me for my first 1/2 Ironman. It just…I don’t know…makes me nervous. Have you ever used a free training plan you’ve found online?

I also signed up to be part of a triathlon team too. I am now a member of the Salt Lake Tri Club. They’ve taken a little bit of a break due to the holidays, but after the holidays, they are going to be meeting I think twice a week or once a week or something for group workouts. I’m SUPER excited!!!

I also started Masters Swim too. I went to one Masters swim class on 12/23, but then Christmas came and I haven’t been since. Starting this Monday, I’ll be going to Masters Swim more. At Masters, they have different swimming lanes for different speeds. I automatically put myself in the slow lane. I haven’t been as fast as I used to be because I haven’t been doing weights, etc.,Β  but about 1/3 of the way through the swim, the lady in the next lane over turned to me and said “You’re not as slow as you think you are…” That helped my motivation a little bit. Hopefully if I keep going, I’ll start to see a little bit of improvement.

What else am I going to do? Well, lately, my drink of choice has been Diet Mt Dew. I know, I know…I need to lay off the soda. Caffeine is my go-to for energy. I struggle sleeping at night, so caffeine helps get me through the day. Well, starting tomorrow…no more soda. I will replace soda with coffee. The boyfriend and I got this nifty little coffee maker that makes 1 cup of coffee at a time. It takes up less counter space too. I’m definitely going to try it out tomorrow.

What else am I going to do? I need to get back in the habit of doing my weights & core workout. I don’t remember the last time I did weights. It’s been a while. I can tell too. Parts of my body are getting flabby again from the weight loss and my skin isn’t as tight and toned. 😦 Gotta change that!

Now that I’ve signed up for 1 race, there’s a kagillion more races I want to sign up for, but my pocketbook won’t let me. Hopefully I can find some extra money to sign up for more races.

What do you do to get motivated? Do you have any races planned for 2014 yet?

  1. Fun fact, I’ve never followed a triathlon training plan. For my first 70.3 I went off of my base fitness for swimming and running, and then just put more time on the bike than I normally would. Whatever plan you pick, just be sure to be flexible. Tri training is so different than marathon training.
I think joining that tri team will be great motivation for ya! πŸ™‚

  2. I’ve been struggling with motivation too. I don’t know that I am brave enough to sign up for all those activities that you did though. I’d like to just keep my exercise going on a private level but it’s hard doing everything by yourself. I hear you.

    1. It’s very hard to do everything by yourself when it comes to workouts. πŸ™‚ I completely agree. Sometimes we get in a slump & can’t get out. Keep at it Julia! You’re doing great!

  3. Good luck! I find that posting what I plan on doing to social media creates an accountability to help keep motivated.
I don’t have anything planned after the Disney Dopey Challenge in 2014. Will figure that out afterwards!
